Stability
Stability is the stability of the basic response of the sensor throughout the operating time, depending on zero drift and interval drift. Zero drift is the change in the output response of the sensor throughout the operating time in the absence of the target gas. Interval drift is the change in the output response of a sensor continuously exposed to a target gas, as indicated by a decrease in the sensor output signal over the operating time. Ideally, a sensor should have a zero drift of less than 10% per year under continuous operating conditions.

Sensitivity
Sensitivity is the ratio of the change in the output of a sensor to the change in the measured input, and is largely dependent on the technology used in the construction of the sensor. Most gas sensors are designed using biochemical, electrochemical, physical and optical principles.

Selectivity
Selectivity is also known as cross-sensitivity. It can be determined by measuring the response of the sensor produced by a certain concentration of the interfering gas. This response is equivalent to the sensor response produced by a certain concentration of the target gas. This characteristic is important in applications where multiple gases are being tracked because cross sensitivity reduces the repeatability and reliability of the measurement and the ideal sensor should have high sensitivity and high selectivity.

Corrosion resistance
Corrosion resistance is the ability of the sensor to be exposed to high volume fractions of the target gas. In the case of large gas leakage, the probe should be able to withstand the desired gas volume fraction 10 to 20 times. On return to normal operating conditions, sensor drift and zero calibration values should be as small as possible. The basic characteristics of a gas sensor, i.e., sensitivity, selectivity, and stability, are determined primarily by the choice of materials. Selection of appropriate materials and development of new materials optimize the sensitive characteristics of gas sensors.

Types of Gas Sensor

Semiconductor Gas Sensor
This type of sensor accounts for about 60% of gas sensors. Semiconductor gas sensors are used to detect the presence of gases in the surrounding environment. They work by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of a semiconductor material when it comes into contact with the gas being detected.

Electrochemical Gas Sensors
Electrochemical gas sensors measure the current generated when the target gas is oxidized or reduced at the electrode, and use this current to determine the gas concentration. There are four types of electrochemical gas sensors: primary battery type, constant potential electrolysis cell type, concentration cell type, and limiting current type.

Infrared Gas Sensor
An infrared gas sensor is a device that detects the presence of various gases in the air based on the absorption of infrared radiation by the gas molecules.

Photoacoustic Gas Sensor
A photoacoustic gas sensor traditionally refers to the method of combining non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) and photoacoustic technology to measure gas concentration.

MEMS sensor
MEMS stands for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems and is a technology that integrates electronic circuits with micro-mechanical structures. It is commonly used to manufacture small sensors and actuators. MEMS sensors are tiny devices that combine electronic and mechanical components on a microscopic scale to measure and sense various physical phenomena, such as acceleration, pressure, temperature, motion, and others.

Working of Gas Sensor

Sensing Element

This is the primary component of the sensor, which interacts with the target gas. Upon contact with the sensing material, a change occurs, which may be either physical or chemical in nature.

Conversion to Electrical Signal

This change, such as a variation in electrical resistance, current, or voltage, is captured and converted into an electrical signal. The magnitude of this signal correlates with the concentration of the gas.

Signal Processing

Subsequently, the circuitry of the sensor processes and calibrates the electrical signal to yield a meaningful output, such as the gas concentration measured in parts per million (ppm).

Output

The final signal is then displayed on a monitoring device or transmitted to a control system, which may initiate an alarm or activate ventilation systems as necessary.
The operational methodology of the sensor may differ based on the specific detection technique employed, such as electrochemical reactions, infrared absorption, or variations in thermal conductivity.

FAQ

Q: What does a gas sensor do?

A: A gas sensor is a device that detects the presence of various gases, particularly those that may pose a threat to humans or animals. It utilizes different materials and technologies to determine gas properties like sensitivity, selectivity, and stability for applications in environmental monitoring and protection.

Q: How do I know if my gas sensor is messed up?

A: Depending on the level of electrical resistance, the fuel gauge changes to reflect the level of gas in the tank. In the event that the fuel gauge constantly reads empty, full, or some random nonsensical reading, then there is an issue with the fuel gauge, the sender, or the wiring in between.

Q: How long do gas sensors last?

A: Gas sensors typically last between 6 months and 4 years, but their lifespan and performance vary based on the factors and conditions they are exposed to.
