Q: What is an alcohol sensor?

A: Understanding Sensors. The alcohol sensor is technically referred to as a MQ3 sensor which detects ethanol in the air. When a drunk person breathes near the alcohol sensor it detects the ethanol in his breathe and provides an output based on alcohol concentration.

Q: How does an alcohol detector work?

A: Accuracy depends on the sample of breath being deep lung air (alveolar air). As the driver breathes out, the device continuously monitors the expired air using an infrared cell. The concentration of ethanol climbs as expiration continues, and when the level of ethanol stabilises, the sample of breath is analysed.

Q: How to maintain alcohol sensors?

A: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the surface of the alcohol sensor. Avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch the sensor and damage its delicate components. If there is stubborn dirt or residue, you can moisten the cloth slightly with a small amount of distilled water. However, make sure to dry the sensor thoroughly after cleaning to prevent moisture from affecting its performance.
