A propane sensor module typically consists of a gas-sensitive material, a signal processing unit, and an output interface that collectively detects and quantifies the presence of propane in the surrounding environment.
Most propane sensor modules operate using semiconductor or electrochemical sensing technology. In semiconductor-based sensors, the sensing material—often tin dioxide (SnOâ‚‚)—exhibits changes in electrical resistance when it comes into contact with propane gas. In clean air, the resistance of the material is relatively high. However, when propane molecules interact with the surface of the sensing layer, they reduce the resistance, allowing more current to flow. This change in electrical properties is measured and converted into a gas concentration reading by the internal circuitry.
